‘Secret’ superpower of our thoughts we all need to use more often!

If you have read my previous blog, you’d know that I am here to share my personal journey towards what I call ‘Wholistic Mindfulness’. It is still early days in this journey and I have an ocean of unknown that I am yet to explore, but the tremendous impact this has already had on me is worth sharing with every one of you here. In this post I want to focus on the most important but often neglected aspect of mindfulness – the mind!

“You are what you think” – a quote famously attributed to Buddhist teachings, is one powerful sentence that has stuck with me for a long time now. In such simple words it informs us that our thoughts have a profound impact on our moods, emotions, behaviour, self-confidence and in many ways – our life, our destiny.

I was introduced to this perspective by the book ‘The Secret’ by Rhonda Byrne, which I am sure many of you have heard and read. This was a time in my life where I was at my lowest, both personally and professionally and had nothing to look forward to. I had this book lying around with me for a few years but was never really intrigued enough to pick it up. Thank god I did!  I am not saying it transformed my life overnight, but it did sow a seed in my mind about the importance of being aware of my thoughts, and more importantly about the power of my thoughts.

That seed is what led to many other avenues of exploring what the mind is capable of by ways such as manifestation and visualization. Think of it, it is the sole deciding factor behind how you want to feel about something. It lets you be happy, sad, anxious and so much else. The fact that you could actually control your mind and in turn control how you feel sounds idealistic, but is it really practical? I’d say yes (well, mostly yes)! From personal experience, I can confidently say that I have seen things turn around for me by just changing the way I think and in turn feel about it. It is a slow process but once you start practicing this, you will eventually start doing this effortlessly.

Start small, but be consistent

I now want to sow that seed in all your minds and help each other realise that we can make our lives a lot more joyful. Next time you are sad, angry or nervous, can you do me a favour and just check in? Acknowledge how you are feeling and see if there is any other way you could feel? Is it really important to feel this way? Is it helping you? More often than not, we find ourselves stressing over matters that are not in our control. Why then do we still continue to worry? The answer is simple. We are humans. We were never taught about mental health, mental awareness and so we think it is the only way to go about things. But that is far from the truth. The truth is that only you are in control of how you want to feel and can change the way you feel by applying your energy in the right direction. I will be writing more on different ways in which the mind can be made to work exactly how we want it to. But to start, can you promise me to just be more aware of your thoughts? Now that can’t be so tough 🙂
